Dick Lehr, author of Black Mass, comes to us with a new story within America's little known history surrounding one of the oldest films on record, The Birth of a Nation. In 1915, a journalist agitator and a brilliant filmmaker began an argument over this incendiary movie that portrayed post-Civil War era freed slaves as disgusting and dangerous. What followed was a public confrontation that spiraled into protests over civil rights. Join moderator Robert Bellinger, director of Suffolk's Black Studies Program, to hear from Lehr the true story of race, war, activism, and free speech that all began with a film. Dick Lehr will be selling and signing copies of his book, The Birth of a Nation, after the program.
