Explore two approaches to the modern woodcut in the companion exhibitions “The German Woodcut: Christiane Baumgartner” and “The German Woodcut: 70s into 80s.” Lia and William Poorvu Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings Patrick Murphy contrasts Baumgartner’s carefully controlled, photographically-based woodcuts such as Transall (2002)—a fourteen-foot-long depiction of military cargo planes on a tarmac—with the coarsely executed woodcuts of the 70s and 80s by Neo-Expressionist artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz.
