In honor of Emancipation Day (April 16) and the important role of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, in the Civil Rights movement, join Jennifer Swope, assistant curator, Textile and Fashion Arts, to celebrate the community and the artistic achievements of its quilters. Explore quilts made by Rachel Carey George (1908–2011) and the influence of the Freedom Quilting Bee on the quilters of Gee’s Bend. Look closely at one of George’s quilts on view, and discuss how Rachel Carey George and other quilters in her community incorporated outside influences for their own aesthetic and expressive purposes.
