The Arts

In the aftermath of the French Revolution, Boston merchant James Swan assembled a notable collection of royal furniture and other decorative arts for his house in Dorchester. Fifty years later, following the French Revolution of 1848, another Bostonian, Peter Parker, purchased a group of French furnishings for his mansion in the South End. In this gallery talk, Thomas Michie, Russell B. and Andrée Beauchamp Stearns Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture, explores the stories behind these objects, among the finest of their kind in any museum, and the sad endings of their owners’ lives.
